The Village:

The house, garden and barn are situated in a small hamlet; Deflores with no through road. Deflores sits between the villages of Benfeita and Dreia at the start of the Slate Trail (Caminho do Xisto) of Central Portugal. It is a very peaceful village with beautiful stone and slate houses and amazing mountain views over to the Serra do Caramulo.

An extremely friendly, hardworking and helpful extended Portuguese family neighbour us full time in the village. The other inhabited houses (around 4) are only occupied during summer. Parking is directly outside the house with room for 2-3 cars. We park our car and large van here. The rest of the parking is at the rear of the village. Parking is NEVER an issue unlike the rest of Europe!

The village also has a communal stone-oven where our neighbours like to bake loaves of Broa, a Portuguese no-hunger corn-bread (one of which normally finds its way to our house and is delicious with butter!)

The Locality:

The Hamlet of Deflores is positioned between the village of Dreia and Benfeita among the Slate Villages (Aldeias do Xisto) and at the start of the Slate Trail of Central Portugal. (Caminho do Xisto)

Deflores is situated in the heart of a friendly rural Portuguese and foreign community whose peoples enjoy working the land, growing abundant fruit and vegetables to feed families far and wide (think boxes of eggs being sent on the buses to Lisbon!) and above all, a sense of togetherness and kinship. They are welcoming of all peoples and appreciate the input that foreign land and home-owners have made to restoring the Slate Villages to their former beauty and breathing new life, skills, energy and populations into the area.
